Dr. Dan Caldwell is Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Pepperdine University’s Seaver College. Previously, he served for three years on active duty as an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve and held positions at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, and the Executive Office of the President in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and Chair of the Council’s Academic Outreach Initiative.

Dan Caldwell is currently Distinguished Professor of International Relations at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, where he has been a professor since 1978. Prof. Caldwell earned his AB, MA and PhD degrees at Stanford University and a master’s degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He has held visiting faculty appointments at the University of Southern California, UCLA and Brown University.

Dr. Caldwell is the author or co-author of several books, including Vortex of Conflict: U.S. Policy toward Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq (the subject of his last talk at TCFR) and Seeking Security in an Insecure World, now in its 3rd edition, which is the subject of his talk in May.



Among the awards that Dr. Caldwell has received are Professor of the Year at Pepperdine University, the Charles and Harriet Luckman Teaching Award, the Pew Faculty Fellowship in International Affairs at Harvard University, and a United States Institute of Peace Fellowship. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and Chair of the Council’s Academic Outreach Initiative.
